The Lack of Trustees voted to make GISD a "Schools of Choice" experiment hoping that grant funding will continue in the future and that families flock to the Island to enjoy themed elementary schools and the GISD Menu of special programs!!

And they did it without flip-flopping the Central Vote!  

Now, no matter where you live on the Island, you can attend whichever school you want to! Unless, that is, there is an application process or a lottery process or your parents aren't paying attention!  Then you just get whereever there is space for you!!

Next year it will be First Come, First Served!!!

Despite prior praises for such in the past, Kelly "code word" Chambers, revealed that her experience with neighborhood schools was not rewarding.  So, she defended her position of elementary themed schools of choice yet voted to grandfather all the students currently enrolled in that school to attend that school next year despite its theme!! 

If themed schools of choice are so great and in such demand, why would you grandfather in those students who live in its current zone? Wouldn't that be aknowledging that the majority of parents WANT NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS???

Symbalism over substance.

And what of the poor students in the temporary buildings at Morgan? Well, they'd better get their enrollment papers in early because those buildings won't be there next year and neither will those students!

The Lack of Trustees also turned Weis into the Early Childhood University complete with nursery school all the way up to 6th grade!!  So now you can take your baby to Weis and they'll attend that school until they are 13 years old!!!  Cradle to grave education!

So now if I am correct, every school that was closed prior to Ike has reopened in some capacity despite the "underutilization" of the school. We'll have more Principals than ever before!  

We have re-opened closed schools under a "bad" budget!!  I should be happy about this.  But I can't be happy about a striated, segregated, gimmicked school district that will probably change again in 2011. That's not planning, that is self-serving TAKS gerrymandering.  Again.

Well, at least some of the GISD teachers are happy!

And the boot lickers are happy.

Watch for your application or lottery ticket or enrollment form and the GISD Menu of Choices!

Saying you want things to happen it different that actually achieving them. According to the video a child can be denied the ability to attend a campus based upon their race, to achieve some sort of diversity quota. Transportation may become the gate keeper. Your child can go anywhere you are willing to drive them to, providing all the other ethnic groups can in sufficient numbers get their kids their too. Sounds like it could be pretty messy. Morgan is already full...TWI programs only take Kindergarten students...so if you are in the TWI program you will continue to attend Morgan and continue to participate in that "theme".but in reality it will not be a school of choice because it is already full and enrollment into a TWI program begins at K. In 2013... Unregistered | 02-07-2010 20:54:11 Ball High and Galveston Early College High School will be high schools by the time 2013 comes around. If there are spaces in the TWI program - or any program, for that matter - during the year or at the end of school years, parents will be eligible to apply to that program. While it is preferred that students start at Kindergarten to get the most from the full TWI program, there are often spaces available as children move around. If there are more requests than spots, the system will go to a lottery to maintain fairness to all of those who wish to be a part of that program. If the bottom line is success of the majority of students saddled with performing well on TAKS, new leadership is desperately needed. The exceptionally large farce surrounding TAKS is that all those "in charge" know little more about TAKS than the jargon included in the TAKS Unformation Booklets, info anyone with a computer can find on the TEA website. The support center ninjas offer little in the way of teaching strategies that enhance student success. Flip that nickel and you'll discover that GISD has released (through RIF) the veteran teachers who were well-equipped in getting students ready to master the various subject-area TAKS tests. Because TEA has created a new academic morass in its effort to "upgrade" the tests, Farce ISD and others across the state are especially challenged to assist in the most critical subject areas (math and science) -- and therein lies part of the joke of "disusing" the Central facility. The TAKS testing program takes on a summative character at the middle school (grades 7 and 8 ) and struggles to be college-like at the high school (grades 9 - 12). In the absence of a constructive continuum of curricula (which Farce ISD has never had), it (Farce) will continue to founder/flounder in disappointing scores for years to come. With the exception of three or four Farce ISD schools, teachers immediately recognize that the occasionally heard "exemplary bound" slogans are totally meaningless. We have had brilliant people, work their way up through the ranks, pay their dues, achieve real results, are good little soldiers, get crapped on by the likes of Hale, Dixon and now Cleveland. Here is your daily dose of management theory. The most effective chief executive is the one who can achieve the highest results possible with the resources provided. Identify your capable, steady, proven leaders bring them into the fold. Nurture them; communicate your vision and expectations. Share with them strategy and methods. Listen to them, they have been here. They know what works and what does not. Just because you read somewhere that some school district made headlines with some program, does NOT mean it is a good idea in Galveston or that it will even work. Incorporate natural and understandable methods for measuring results, and incorporate on-going (how am I doing) reports back into the process. Your once a year - GOTCHA you are a screw up - events serve no one, not the teacher, the administrators, parents or students. And most importantly, recognize all successes, especially in group settings. Make the individual contributor feel they are each valued.
